I really wasn’t planning on entering the code of conduct discussion that is going on in the developer community at the moment. Last time I did, I got called at best, a White Knight, and at worst… well that would breach any decent CoC every written.

PhpStorm – Reformat Code…
For my recent job interview with PhpStorm, I was asked to create a video screencast. I’m interested in creating and selling high quality video content and have been looking around for a platform to help me achieve that, so I decided to release the PhpStorm sample video on Vimeo; mainly to see if it fits my needs.
I’d love to get feedback on the style and content of the video, the production and hosting platform.

Debugging PHP Command Line (with PHP Storm & XDebug)
At PHP North West I had huge difficulties configuring Xdebug and both my PHP and PHP Storm so they play nice in a CLI environment. So here, for others and almost certainly my future self, is how to do it. Continue reading

PHP Versions
I can clearly remember when I was a Ghost Programmer – clocking in and out of 9 to 5 jobs, and switching off when I got home. Like most jobbing coders, I used to have ideas that I’d play around with when I knocked off the job, some half-arsed side projects and the odd little job for friends or family, but largely I’d not think about coding on evenings and weekends. There must be thousands and thousands of developers just like this working on PHP projects right now.

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ll have noticed me banging on a lot about conferences and codes of conduct lately. You’ll probably be a bit bored about my constant posturing by now, and I know I’ve lost followers because of it, so I’d like to brain dump what I think of codes of conduct, and why, in my opinion, they are so important.
Developing Difficulties
I’m not sure how much I’m just normal here, or how much of my inner self I’m revealing, but I’d like to share some strange motivational cycles I’ve been having over the last eighteen months or so.
Composer Basics
From my experiences in #zftalk Zend Framework support channel on Freenode, it seems that lots of people still don’t understand the fundamental rules of using Composer in production. So I thought I’d run through some of the basic ideas behind using composer in development and production.
Why Did we Sponsor PHPWomen?
I’ve just started listening to PHP Town Hall episode 25. Firstly, let me just make a point that I’ve only listened to the first 20 minutes or so, but I feel like I should make some points about why we, at Roave, decided to put our money where our mouth is and support PHPWomen financially.
